There are two kinds of teeth discoloration, we will go through each one, so you will be able to understand how to take better care of your teeth after whitening.

Extrinsic discoloration mainly comes from the enamel or outside layer of your teeth. These are the types of stains that would affect the discoloration of the tooth, berries, tea, coffee, and tobacco. The best way to keep your teeth from staining extrinsically is by staying away from these types of foods or substances to keep your teeth whiter than ever.

Intrinsic discoloration mainly comes from the inside of the tooth. It can start from the inside layer of the tooth called the dentin. Things that will cause the dentin to stain would be dental trauma, certain medications, or even genetics.

Professional vs. Over-the-Counter Whitening

At Back of the Wasatch Heber Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer a customized tray that will fit perfectly to your teeth. We will supply whitening gel that you will be able to apply at home. We also have another option of in-house whitening where you will be able to whiten your teeth in our office with our whitening specialist.

There are other at-home options from the store, but those are a more generic way to whiten teeth. They would use generic trays, strips, and use peroxides to whiten the teeth. Depending on the whitening option you are looking for, we will have the best-customized option with better quality products that will help with the longevity and strength of the whitening process.

The Whitening Process

Steps that are needed to get your perfect, bright smile will depend on the whitening option that you choose. The whitening process usually takes about an hour in our office to make sure that the process goes as smoothly as possible.

Some of our procedures require a specific light and multiple applications of the whitening solution every 15-20 minutes in order to speed up the process and get better results. Before and after the appointment we will check your teeth against a color scale to see how well the teeth whitened. There is a possibility that the teeth will become 3-8 shades lighter in the first visit.

Long Term Results

For the best results, it is important to avoid foods that will stain the enamel of the teeth. These would include coffee, tea, soda, etc. It’s also important that you come in for your regular checkup and cleaning to make sure that your teeth are being cleaned regularly to avoid stains.

Frequently Asked Questions

Teeth whitening is a process that is made to remove stains from teeth. Depending on the whitening option that you choose, it usually involves a customized tray, whitening gel, or a specialized light, which leaves your smile whiter and brighter.

Yes, when getting teeth whitened by our team of professionals. Our office uses quality whitening products that help protect your gums throughout the whitening process. It’s important to follow the care steps provided to make sure that you have the optimal results.

If you are choosing to whiten your teeth in our office, the process usually takes about 60-90 minutes. This will depend on how much whiter you want to go and what stage of discoloration your teeth are currently at. For our take-home option, it depends on each patient, it can take from a few days to a few weeks to see the best results.

Whitening is a great option for removing surface stains that are caused by foods, drinks, or smoking. The stains that are not as easy to remove would be the intrinsic or internal stains that are caused by some medications or dental trauma.

Some patients experience temporary sensitivity or gum irritation after whitening their teeth. Something that can help reduce these side effects would be using desensitizing products like toothpaste a couple of days before you start whitening.

How long the results last can vary depending on each patient. Coming into your regular checkups and cleanings, as well as taking care of your teeth at home can make the whitening last from a few months to a few years.

Unfortunately, whitening does not have an effect on crowns or veneers, they are custom-made to match the shade of your natural teeth. You are always welcome to give our office a call to talk about options during your appointment.

For our in-house whitening option, it’s best to space out sessions over several months. For our take-home whitening option, you should be given instructions when you receive your take-home trays. It’s best to follow the instructions that were given to you to avoid oversure.

If you have sensitive teeth and are looking for another alternative, we would recommend dental veneers. These are custom made and fit over the surface of your teeth, which would hide the stains and discoloration of the teeth.

Usually we recommend not to whiten teeth when pregnant or breastfeeding. There are not enough studies to show the effects that whitening may have. For any questions for cosmetic procedures, give our office a call and we can happily answer any questions that you may have.
