There are many types of periodontal surgery available, and some specific procedures include a gingivectomy, osseous surgery, bone grafts, tissue grafts, flap surgery, and more. The specific course of treatment would depend on each specific case. The periodontist will be sure to go over what the best option is for each patient.
Because you will be numbed for the procedure by a local anesthetic, it is normal not to feel pain during this time. However, once the numbing has worn off, it is normal to feel some discomfort and soreness. To help manage this, the periodontist may prescribe some medications to help with the residing pain.
Every patient is very different in the recovery process and varies greatly on the type of procedure that was performed. Still, usually, it can take anywhere from a few days to about a week or two to fully heal. The periodontist will be able to provide you with aftercare instructions while you are resting at home.
There are always risks when going into a surgical procedure these risks are low, but the ones for periodontal surgery would include infection, bleeding, or a reaction to the anesthesia.
After periodontal surgery, the periodontist may recommend eating soft foods that are high in vitamins and proteins. For example, oatmeal, eggs, soup, fruit, mashed potatoes, and steamed veggies. Foods to avoid would be hard, crunchy, or spicy foods, these may interrupt the healing process, making it longer for the area to heal.
The success of periodontal surgery depends on several factors. For example, it depends on the type of treatment performed, the severity of the gum disease, and whether the patient followed the recommended aftercare instructions.
The best thing that you can do to maintain oral health after periodontal surgery is to keep brushing and flossing twice daily or after every meal if possible and to see the dentist for checkups and cleanings.
